FSS Stakeholder Workshop: Strengthening Human Rights Due Diligence in Ugandan Coffee Production
With increasing market expectations and evolving sustainability regulations such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and EU Forced Labour Regulation, coffee sector stakeholders are facing new challenges and opportunities. International buyers are placing greater emphasis on robust systems for identifying and addressing social risks, engaging affected stakeholders and ensuring effective grievance management.
Building practical capacities in these areas can help Ugandan coffee exporters strengthen their sustainability performance, respond to customer requirements and enhance long-term access to international markets.
This workshop will bring together coffee sector stakeholders, practitioners and experts to exchange experiences and discuss practical approaches for strong Ugandan coffee supply chains. The day will start with an introduction to human rights due diligence, to the human right to food and the Food Security Standard. A special focus will be put on social audit methodologies during the first half of the day and on effective grievance mechanisms after lunch. While audits help identify and assess potential risks, grievance mechanisms provide workers, farmers and communities with an ongoing channel to raise concerns and contribute valuable feedback. Together, these approaches support continuous improvement, enhance transparency and help organisations respond more effectively to social risks in supply chains.
