FSS Stakeholder Workshop: The right to food in agricultural supply chains – Complying with mandatory HRDD regulations using FSS

The Food Security Standard (FSS) Stakeholder Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, brought together representatives from the East African private sector, civil society, academia and international development organizations. The aim was to explore how sustainability certification can support Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in agricultural production.

The event featured contributions from Welthungerhilfe, FSS experts, auditing professionals and agricultural producers, offering insights into emerging German and EU due diligence legislation and the role of the right to food in corporate sustainability strategies. Particular focus was placed on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and the potential of certification systems to strengthen due diligence efforts, through practical experiences from social audits and FSS implementation in agricultural supply chains.

The Food Security Standard (FSS) takes into account the Right to adequate Food in agricultural production. Applying the FSS in sustainability certification systems ensures that farmers, workers, and neighbouring communities are food secure.
