Policies against Hunger Conference: From Rights to Action! The Right to Food as a Compass for Resilient Food Systems
Organized by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the annual Policies Against Hunger conference took place in Berlin from 23 to 25 June 2025 under the theme “From Rights to Action! The Right to Food as a Compass for Resilient Food Systems.” It brought together stakeholders from politics, administration, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and academia to discuss pathways towards more sustainable, resilient and equitable food systems.
The event focused on addressing global hunger and malnutrition through systemic approaches to food security transformation, with the right to food as a guiding principle throughout the discussions. As part of the conference, the Food Security Standard (FSS) was presented in Working Group 4, “Sustainable and Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains,” chaired by Dr. Pascal Liu, Senior Economist and Lead Responsible Global Value Chains at the FAO. Dr. RafaĂ«l Schneider, Deputy Head at Welthungerhilfe, introduced the FSS as a practical tool for integrating the human right to food into corporate due diligence processes, presenting it as a joint BMEL & FNR-funded project between Meo Carbon Solutions and Welthungerhilfe.

The working group also brought together business perspectives on sustainable and responsible agricultural supply chains, including inputs from ofi on regenerative agriculture and from the International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) on organic farming approaches in India. Practical experiences from the Vietnamese coffee sector illustrated how the FSS is applied by certified companies: Huy Dat Pham of INTIMEX MY PHUOC JSC, an FSS-certified coffee exporter, shared insights from implementation on the ground. The working group’s recommendations for action were summarized on the conference’s final day by Lisa Marie Pyka, Project Manager Human Rights at Meo Carbon Solutions.
